Bypass your School and Work Filters with an Anonymous Proxy Server

With the proliferation of the Internet, many websites promote themselves by sending you spam junk mails, advertisings and even embed spyware that is difficult to remove onto your computer. These things not only keep track of your personal information, but also enable hackers and crackers to infiltrate your system. Anonymous proxy servers act as a wall between your data and the Internet, whereby providing security to your system and data. There are however, other reasons to use an anonymous proxy server.

If your work or school has any type of filtering in place to prevent people from visiting certain websites, an anonymous proxy server is a great way to get around such restrictions. Anonymous proxy servers work by acting as a "middle man"; they download the requested pages to their proxy server and in turn you download the page, all images and other such objects from the proxy server to your browser, thus bypassing any filters or annoying firewalls. Not only is this a viable alternative for students to bypass their school's filter to access such popular student sites such as Myspace or Xanga but can be used if your workplace has strict limitations on which websites you can access. Most anonymous proxy bypass servers use one of two program, PHProxy or CGIProxy, both of which are excellent proxy software packages.

After you have discovered the benefits of using anonymous proxy servers, you will probably want to try it out. There are numerous free proxy services out there, one of the most popular is SpySurfing ( http://www.spysurfing.com/ ) and is a really fast proxy server that is popular among both students look to bypass their school filters and adults looking to bypass their work place firewalls.

Spam Blockers And The Average Consumer

Spam blockers are absolutely essential to sanity in email correspondence. Chances are pretty strong that if you have signed up for something online you will be barraged with emails. It is also quite probable that your email address will be sold to third party marketers and you will receive unwanted correspondence from more than one party.

This is why spam blocking is so important.

In many cases spam software uses filtering techniques to determine the likelihood of this dread scourge and may send it to your spam folder bypassing your inbox. One of the primary filters used to determine spam is whether the email is sent to you individually or if it is part of a multi-recipient list.

Spam Blockers And The Average Consumer

You can go into your spam folder and whitelist or tell your spam folder to allow certain emails through even if they appear to be spam from the standpoint of your email protocol.

Another filer for spam retention is based on certain keywords. There are standard keywords and then there are keywords you might want to include.

You can check your spam folder and attempt to unsubscribe from whatever list thinks you are a part of it. However, there is some speculation that any correspondence with a spammer may ultimately result in more unwanted emails. Why? Simply because the spammer now knows that someone actually owns the email address and looks through the information that is sent. This is reminiscent of the time prior to the do not call list when computers phoned individuals hoping that someone would answer. When they did, that number was often sold as an active account and sold to other telemarketing firms.

The good news is most email programs will flush the spam periodically so, unless you think you might actually have email to review in your spam folder, your email program should remove the unwanted emails eventually and regularly.

I suppose spam blockers may be one of the best ways to manage this problem. If online email becomes too regulated it also becomes nearly impossible to do business using email marketing. I have even found evidence (and you probably have, too) that even correspondence you may desire can be caught in the spam folder. It doesn't hurt to review your spam folder from time to time just to make sure there isn't something you need.

One of the downfalls of spam blockers is when they see a large number of emails coming in from one email address and determine that this is an abuse and render that sender to the spam folder.

I have a friend who provides a service of historical data for each day of the year. He always sends that information in advance and some clients find the emails in the spam folder simply because a weeks worth of daily content was mailed on the same day.

Spam blockers are becoming increasingly intuitive and are doing an admirable job in keeping unwanted messages from reaching your inbox.

Work to separate the desired mail in your spam folder from the material that generally deals in pharmaceuticals, mortgages and multiple business offers.

Is Email Harassment Illegal?

Not so long ago, a girl committed suicide because of messages that she was getting through the popular social networking site MySpace. This does not mean that MySpace is evil, but hopefully it was a wake up call for parents to know what their children are doing online, even if they feel they are being snoopy. Though you may not think of messages through MySpace as being email, they are. Not everyone behaves online, and there are times when email addresses can be harassing in nature, and even dangerous.

The nature of email makes it possible for people to think they are sending out messages that are anonymous, but that is rarely the case. There are some that know how to do this, but most Internet users have no idea. They just assume leaving their name off of an account means they are untraceable. That is simply not true, as many people have found out. They may feel free to send messages that are sinister and harassing in nature because they think no one will know who they are.

Though the line between a heated and illegal email is gray, and not all locations or jurisdictions with the US have the same laws, there are some that are definitely illegal. Some districts have deemed anything harassing to be illegal, no matter if it is going through phone lines, mail letters, electronic communications, or in person. Those that have this type of harassment in mind often use email because they think it is hard to trace. With the law on someone's side, a lawyer can get a service provider to hand over identifying information.

Is Email Harassment Illegal?

You may not know if a harassing email coming into your inbox is illegal where you live or not, but that does not mean you should not do something about it. You can try to find out about the laws where you live, and you can contact the authorities if you feel threatened in any way. You can also forward the email to your service provider, and then call them with an explanation to see if there is anything that they can do.

You may want to know who sent the email. You can find some limited information if you do a reverse email lookup Not all are traceable however. No matter what you find, do nothing with that information unless you want to turn it over to the authorities. Do not respond to such an email, and do not use what you find to contact the source of the email. You know who to avoid, if need be, but you don't want them to know you are on to them if they insist on remaining anonymous. Let the authorities deal with the problem for you.

5 Most Popular Types of Computer Software (And What They Do)

As the publisher of a software information website, I often use keyword-research tools* to determine which software-related topics are the most popular (based on Internet search activity). By knowing what people are looking for online, I can build content to help them.

You can't help but notice trends and patterns when doing this kind of research, and I thought you might be interested in some of those trends. For example, in this article I've compiled five of the most popular types of software in the world, based on how often people look them up through Google, Yahoo, MSN and the other search engines.

#1 - Anti-virus Tools

5 Most Popular Types of Computer Software (And What They Do)

For a long time, I've had a conspiracy theory that the companies that make anti-virus programs are in league with the people who create computer viruses in the first place. After all, few things sell anti-virus software like the constant threat of new viruses. Regardless of who's generating the fear, they are doing a good job of it, because anti-virus software is consistently one of the most frequently searched programs.

Most people computer users are very familiar with these programs, because they come pre-installed on most PCs. There is also a dizzying array of software products that fall into this category, so I won't try to summarize them here. That's another article entirely.

#2 - Tax Software

Okay, so there's a very good chance this one made the list because I conducted my research at tax time (in March). Perhaps if I conducted this study later in the year, tax software would not be quite as popular from a search engine usage standpoint. At any rate, it makes the cut today and falls in right behind the anti-virus programs based on the number of searches.

I use these programs every year at tax time. Or, to be honest, I should say my wife uses these programs while I provide moral support. At any rate, these software products are incredibly useful for people who prepare their own tax returns.

Though each program offers slightly different features, they all perform the same basic function. They walk you step by step through the process of completing your tax-return forms. You just fill in the blanks with the requested information, and the software does the rest. Popular tax software programs include TaxAct, TurboTax and TaxCut (by H&R Block).

#3 - Accounting Software

This type of computer program might be high on the list of Internet search for two reasons. For one thing, it's very versatile and can be used by professional accountants, small business owners, and others. Secondly, there are terminology reasons for the Internet search popularity of this software. Some people use the phrase "accounting" when referring to the tax-preparation programs mentioned previously, while others use the phrase when referring to the more full-featured programs used by professional accountants.

Regardless of these semantic differences, accounting software is commonly searched through the major search engines, so it makes my list. These programs are most often used to manage the revenue and expenses of a company, including payroll and corporate tax information.

#4 - DVD Burning Tools

As the name suggests, these software programs allow you to reproduce or "burn" copies of DVDs. Of course, these tools also open a Pandora's box of legal issues, because you cannot just make copies of a commercial DVD without violating copyright laws.

But this is not a legal lesson -- it's a list of popular software types as measured by Internet search patters. And by that yardstick DVD burning programs certainly make the list.

#5 - Video Editing Programs

These software tools allow you to edit video sequences on a computer. You don't even need a fancy computer to use them, but just a regular old desktop unit (as long as its compatible with the software program you choose).

These products have become increasingly popular over the years, thus creating an army of amateur filmmakers. To use them, you would first create the video footage itself. Then you would use this unique and powerful software to edit the footage on any compatible desktop computer. You can import and export video to and from your computer, cut and paste sections of video, and add special effects and transitions.

* Sources: KeywordTracker and Keyword Discovery. I cross-referenced the most common software types from both tools to create this list.

Back Pain - Rib Out of Alignment

Back rib pain can be one of the most uncomfortable issues. Maybe I should say that you'd be lucky if your pain were only uncomfortable, a rib out can really hurt. It can be in the middle of your back, or it can be in the ribcage in front. It's not the spine, the pain is no where near it. Maybe it's a cough pain that really hurts when you sneeze. And, what is this deep breath pain about?

Whatever it is, you want to know what it is and how to deal with it.

Most likely, it's a rib subluxation -- a rib out of alignment.

Back Pain - Rib Out of Alignment

A rib out of alignment is actually a fairly common occurrence. It's just that they usually go back into place on their own without you ever knowing that anything ever happened. Having a rib out that doesn't go back causes the muscles to tense up giving you your brand new back pain in the rib.

The ribs have joints where they connect with the sternum in front, and with the vertebra in back. They can shift up or down, though they have a usual pattern. It's when they get stuck that you have a rib misalignment that ends up causing pain.

You have a couple of options. One is that you can go to a chiropractor and have it put back into place. One issue people have with this is the cost involved. Another issue can be the pain a forceful adjustment can cause.

That pain can be avoided in most cases if you can find an activator chiropractor. An activator is a tool that knocks the joint back into place, usually painlessly. But, that still costs money.

Another option is that you could live with it until the muscles finally relax and the rib goes back into place naturally.

A massage therapist can sometimes get the muscles to relax enough that a gentle push will move the rib back. This isn't hard, but they would have to know how to do it. Or, if they help it relax enough it might go back on its own like it might usually do, but then there's that money issue again.

A final option is to put it back yourself. This really isn't that hard to do, but it does take knowledge. You can figure it out for yourself, others have. The best thing about that is that you can always avoid the cost of an adjustment. And, the method of putting it back yourself is very gentle and doesn't involve a crack at all.

So, if you have a rib out of alignment, let's see what can be done about that cough pain!

The method of adjusting yourself is called self-adjusting-technique. But first, let me be honest with you. For many people, adjusting the ribs takes time to learn. But, the good news is that there is a video available on how someone can do the adjustment on you. It's still very gentle, and it works really well.

There's also videos that show how to do the techniques on yourself. They'll be up soon, and you'll get access to all these videos once you buy the book and they are available. And, you won't have to pay the higher rate that will be charged once all the videos are available. It'll be a package deal that you'll get ahead of time. (I apologize if you're reading this article and the price has gone up already. You can contact me and see if there's something we can work out, like just getting access to the video.)

It gives a lot of information about back pain and what can be done about it. There are also some very helpful emails that come after you sign up. And, you don't have to worry about spam, everything is fully compliant with the anti-spam laws.

Also, I am available via email. You can send me one now, I usually answer within a day or two. The free book comes with my email address, or check my blog.

Talk to a Stranger in Live Chat

What is Omegle?

Omegle is a brand new service on the internet for you to meet new and possibly old friends. When you use Omegle, the system will randomly select a person for you to speak with. This of course, will be a stranger. The chats are also anonymous so no one knows who is talking to whom.

How does it work?

Talk to a Stranger in Live Chat

You go to the Omegle website at Omegle and there you will be asked if you want to chat with a stranger by pressing the start to chat button. Almost immediately, you will find yourself connected to a stranger. Now you can chat away with different people and disconnect anytime you don't want to chat with a particular stranger anymore. The system will pair two people randomly for one-on-one private chatting. The site uses the two handles, 'stranger' and 'you' to connect people. It is a very simple system and very easy to use, no matter what your level of Internet experience may be.

History and Usage

When this service was launched, it generated about 100 users. Now at last report, (as of the month of April) the amount of people online at any time was reaching more or less around 3000. The report also states that the site is getting around 150,000 hits a day. The system mandates that you use certain chat names, which are "you" and "stranger." The site has an oddly chipper slogan that says, "Talk to strangers." The site also uses such phrases as 'your conversational partner has disconnected' at the end of every chat. These unique and unusual phrases seem to make the site more popular.

The concept of an anonymous chat is not the first chat that was created with Omegle. There have been comparisons made back to the early 1990s. It is said to have similarities to a web site called 'A Nice Chat,' which was created before Omegle. There is the difference that in 'A Nice Chat' the users were prompted to use a nickname that others would see. While in Omegle users are just known by "you" and "stranger" making it more clear that the conversation is anonymous.

At this time, there is no age limit or other limitations applied to anyone who wants to use the site. The site does not appear to block any profanity or spam bots with any filters. There are no charges, no fees, and no contact to use the site. There is also no registering and no need to create an account. The website is free to use.

Who uses Omegle?

All sorts of users use the site. Although it seems that, there are more teenagers but that is just a guess of the users that patronize the website. Some people have reported visitors from around the world and people of many different age ranges.

Omegle is a website that is used to communicate with anonymously and randomly picked people across the internet via a chat room. Leif K-Brooks of Vermont was the creator of this site. He launched the site in March of 2009. K-Brooks hope in creating this site was to provide an alternative way for people to connect in a non-threatening anonymous manner. He felt that too many people had become stagnant in the way they met people. K-Brooks thinks that people often seek out like-minded individuals who have the same goals and ideas. By mixing things up a little, people can meet other individuals who may have different ideas or different ways of looking at things. Variety can make a great difference in everyone's life. Check out Omegle and see what you think.

How To Set Up An Outlook Express Filter

When I began my anti spam crusade, I had assumed that most people online could competently do things such as set up a spam filter in Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express. It turns out this is not so, the fear of making adjustment to the default settings getting the better of quite a majority of the population, or else just never having the time or inclination to get in and figure it out.

Luckily it is quite an easy process, and even the most computer-ese challenged amongst us can get it done easily once we understand how to it works. In this little how-to I am going to give an example how to set up a filter using Outlook Express, purely on the basis that this is the program open on my desktop as I type this.

There are two parts to a filter - a condition, and an action. The condition defines the set of circumstances that will trigger the action. The action is of course what happens when the circumstances described in the condition are true.

How To Set Up An Outlook Express Filter

The example I will use here is to delete messages with [SPAM] in the title. My ISP once went through a rather silly phase of not deleting spam - but marking it in the header and leaving the deletions to us. It seems they too had made an assumption that all their customers could set up a filter to handle the hundreds of [SPAM] marked messages they suddenly started receiving. They were quickly put right but overloaded switchboards.

So we are going to create a simple filter in Outlook Express that deletes everything with [SPAM] in the title.

Step 1: Click on the menu Item Tools. Point at Message Rules and select(click on) mail...
A small new window will open with the heading Message Rules and three tabs. The Mail... tab will be selected.

Step 2: Click on the New... button.
Another new window opens with the titlebar New Mail Rule. There are 4 boxes to fill in.

Step 3: In the first white box Click in the square beside "Where the Subject line contains specific word".
A tick will appear in the box. You will notice the 3rd box gets some more writing in it, we will deal with that soon.

Step 4: In the second white box click in the square next to Delete It.
A tick will appear in the box. The text in the third white box will now read: Apply this rule after the message arrives, Where the Subject line contains specific words, Delete it. The words 'contains specific words will be blue and underlined.

Step 5: In the third white box click on the blue underlined words 'contains specific words'.
A new window will open with the title bar Type Specific Words.

Step 6: In the first box in this window type [SPAM]. Click Add. Click Okay.
You will be returned to the previous window. The third box will now contain the text: Apply this rule after the message arrives Where the Subject line contains '[SPAM]' Delete it

Step 7: In the fourth Box type a userfriendly name for your spam filter. I use "Delete [SPAM] rule". Click the OK button.
After clicking okay you are taken back to the message rules window. Click OK here and your filter is added. Well Done.

As far as I am aware there is no limit to the number of filters you can apply. The important thing to remember is that the filter doesn't discriminate. If the result returns true then the action (Deleting in this case) will be applied.

Happy filtering.

COPD And Life Expectancy

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD is a disease that causes destruction of airways in the lungs. In the United States, it's the fourth highest cause of death. Every year, more than 85,000 people die from COPD.

In most of cases, the root cause for COPD is smoking or consumption of tobacco. Naturally, COPD causes a number of health problems and reduces the life expectancy of those who suffer from it. If detected and treated early, life expectancy can be greatly increased, and if smoking is stopped immediately, lung has the capacity to recover dramatically. This, in turn, increases the life expectancy.

In cases where the intensity of COPD has developed beyond the initial stages, giving up smoking alone may not help increase life expectancy. In such cases, oxygen therapy is given and the patient must inhale oxygen through a mask or nasal cannulae placed beneath his nostrils. The patient needs to purchase oxygen tanks for home use, or portable versions for travel. Nowadays, oxygen concentrator machines that use air to produce oxygen are effective replacements for traditional oxygen tanks.

COPD And Life Expectancy

In many cases, when COPD is in its final stages, even oxygen therapy may not help the patient. In such cases transplantation of the lungs may be the only way of increasing life expectancy. Transplantation is suggested to those patients whose life expectancy is felt to be less than two to three years. However, at this stage, there is no average to determine the life expectancy of a patient.

If COPD is detected in a person, giving up smoking is the best way to increase life expectancy. Other treatments like oxygen therapy, exercise and transplantation will also help, but you cannot fight COPD unless you quit smoking.

The Top Twelve Threats No Computer User Should Ignore

The internet is undoubtedly a fantastic resource for families and offers a rich vein of educational content.

However, there are potential dangers - welcome to the seedy world of viruses, spam, trojans, pornography, spyware and other nasties.

These are the Top Twelve Threats No Computer User Should Ignore.

The Top Twelve Threats No Computer User Should Ignore

1. Viruses - A computer program that copies itself. They often disrupt your computer system or damage your data. Viruses are usually received by email attachments so be careful opening anything from a dubious source. They can affect anyone, for example, the destructive Mydoom worm affected one out of three small and mid-sized businesses.

2. Spyware - Sends information about you and your computer to somebody else. Spyware may send the addresses of sites you have visited or worse still, transmit personal information. With today's concerns about identify theft this is a real worry. For example, CoolWebSearch may hijack web searches, home page, and other Internet Explorer settings. Spyware is normally received as part of shareware or freeware downloaded from the web.

3. IP Spoofing - A technique to gain unauthorized access to computers, whereby the intruder sends messages to a computer with an address indicating that the message is coming from a trusted host.

4. Trojans - An apparently legitimate computer program that is really intended to disrupt and damage computer activity by sending information, perhaps even passwords onto a third party without you knowing. As an example, recent emails entitled "Osama Bin Laden Captured" attempted to download the "Trj/Small.B." Trojan if the embedded URL was clicked. This trojan attempts to hijack the PC.

5. Spam - Unsolicited mail often promoting products of a dubious financial or sexual nature. Don't leave your email address on websites and internet bulletin boards as they are harvested by spammers.

6. Adware - puts advertisements on your screen. These take many forms including popups, popunders and advertisements that appear later, even if your browser is closed. Some are sent using the Windows Messenger service which allows a spammer to direct an advertisement straight to your computer by sequentially sending messages to IP addresses. Always irritating, they are also often of a pornographic nature.

7. Diallers - for those of us still with dial up modems, dialler programs redirect calls to a very expensive number. You won't know until you get the bill.

8. Hijackers - Hijackers take control of your web browser and may reset your home page, search bar and search pages. They can redirect you to undesirable sites or stop you going to particular sites.

9. Hackers - With so much personal data available online to anyone with a password you must be sure your password is secure. If you are using your mother's maiden name, your cat's name or your birthday then your password is at risk. Here are two tips for making a secure password. Method One - pick two random unrelated three letter words and two digits. Mix them up and what do you have? A secure password such as "red19cat" or "hotpin73". Method Two - pick a short sequence of words such as Now Is The Winter Of Our Discontent Made Glorious' and you have a password of "nitwoodmg". You could even change the I's and O's to digits.

10. Phishing - Emails purporting to come from reliable sources such as Paypal, eBay or your bank. Often wanting you to verify your account details, they can look very realistic but are generally scams to harvest usernames and passwords. Always open a new browser winder and type the address there, rather than clicking on the link provided.

11. Hoaxes - Chain letters, scams, false alarms. At best they take up time and bandwidth but at worst vulnerable can be victims of fraud. Pass it on!

12. Stranger-danger - For those of us with children - do you know what they actually do when they are online? Are they working on homework tasks, downloading illegal music or pornography? Or are they chatting to strangers in chat rooms? You should consider blocking access to undesirable sites and logging their activity with a surveillance tool. Oh, and don't forget that where children are concerned, computers should always be kept in a family room and never in their bedroom.

Three Step Action Plan

There are three basic, essential steps that should be taken to ensure your PC is kept threat-free.

Firstly , be sensible when opening attachments or following email instructions from apparently reputable sites.

Secondly , make sure you are using the latest service pack of Windows as Microsoft is continually closing loopholes to tighten up security.

Finally, there's a range of low cost tools such as firewalls, antivirus, spam blockers and spyware killers available. Like everything else they vary in quality and you tend to get what you pay for so always do your research first and perhaps try a free trial before getting your credit card out.
